Chapter 8

Amber crept through the darkness, careful of where she placed each foot. The ground was dry, and it seemed like every time she took a step, the sound was loud enough to wake the dead. The fact that there was dead silence around here terrified her even more.

She hadn’t gotten information from anybody about Annette except what Mary had admitted tonight. And Amber knew that, if there would be a police investigation, they would want the bodies exhumed—once found—which she was pretty sure wouldn’t happen anytime soon. More so, it wouldn’t make anybody very happy.

But to bring this to a successful conclusion without getting herself killed was the mission now. Getting out was the most important thing. Amber had to get the hell away from here, and hopefully then she could come back with reinforcements to get her guys free and clear as well. She couldn’t stop thinking about the three guys who had walked Tomas out here somewhere. She could only hope that Dezi had been around to give him a hand, or at least Saul, but she didn’t know that for sure.

No way to know or to find out. Absolutely no way to know anything. This place was built on secrecy, and the members weren’t open to anybody jumping into their problems. It wasn’t a matter of problems as much as a case of leadership issues, and she wasn’t even sure if that was quite fair because something seemed to be going on with Baxter.

While he had certainly been intimidating, he hadn’t let her get near enough to have a good look at him. It was quite possible that he was ill, and a power struggle was happening here. That thought kept her occupied, as she continued walking through the darkness. Was that even possible? Is that what Mary was trying to hide? Who was the logical successor? The number two in command typically. Was Mary playing both sides, trying to secure her own future position?

Amber thought about it and then realized that the number two would likely have been Peaches’s husband originally. And, when that happened, he probably would have gotten rid of Peaches, one way or the other. He would have found a traditional divorce out of the question, especially since he rejected government involvement of any kind, and any financial settlement suitable to the courts would have been out of the question too. He probably would have been fine seeing Peaches get nothing at all, even if she did live.

There was really no way to know what her lousy husband had been up to, but, now that he was dead—and her friend Annette potentially along with him—Amber had to wonder who would have replaced him as number two. And who was after that? Why take out Tristan in the first place though? Had he not been loyal enough? Was a relationship with Annette against the code?

There were so many possibilities that Amber didn’t have any way to know about. It was mind-boggling, yet strangely fascinating because somebody knew something.
